Scores of grassroots football matches in Sheffield have been axed again this weekend due to the rain.

The city council’s Parks and Countryside department issued a message stating: “After another week of very wet weather it is not suitable to play on these conditions.

“Our grass pitches have been unable to recover from the ongoing waterlogged state and so we must try to prevent potential longer term damage from disrupting the season further.

“Things are looking a little brighter and drier throughout next week which should improve the situation. We thank you for your patience and cooperation.”
