Grassroots football: Sheffield Council cancels league matches this weekend after rain

Scores of grassroots football matches in Sheffield have been axed this weekend due to the rain.

The city council’s Parks and Countryside department issued a message stating: “We're sorry to inform that due to the continued wet and miserable weather causing waterlogged pitches, all organised league football matches are cancelled this weekend.”

Sheffield has been hit by days of heavy rain in January and February.

The BBC is forecasting dry and bright day conditions on Saturday, with plenty of wintry sunshine. However, cloud will push in from the west in the evening.

On Sunday morning, any overnight snow will soon clear, leaving behind variable cloud and scattered heavy showers, some thundery.
