Pictures taken by Val show around three metres of railing missing and the garden’s 1.5-metre remembrance stone and iron soldier silhouette both knocked over and lying in the grass.

It is understood the damage was caused over two weeks ago when a car crashed through the railings and into the garden - which is located between Sussex Road and Arundel Road.

Speaking about the ruined memorial, Val, who served in the Navy from 1974-1977, said: “Whenever I’m passing I always stop to do a nod and think about those who have died.

“I was absolutely shocked, I couldn’t believe it. To be honest when I saw it last night I just started crying. I was shocked, very shocked.

“It should be restored as son as possible because people going past will just wonder what’s going on some will be quite distressed, like me.”

South Yorkshire Police said: “ We were called to the junction of Sussex Road and Arundel Road at 10.50am on 8 March following reports of a single vehicle collision

“It was reported a grey Volkswagen Golf had left the road and caused damage to a nearby war memorial garden.

“The driver of the car left the scene but we were later able to confirm that no injuries were caused as a result of the collision.

“A 23-year-old woman has been reported on summons for driving a motor vehicle otherwise than in accordance with a licence and using a motor vehicle on a road or public place without third party insurance.”

Ecclesfield Parish Council said: “We are deeply saddened to confirm that damage has been caused to the Ecclesfield Parish Memorial Garden on Sunday 8th March 2026.

“It is distressing to see the damaged caused to a much cherished place created to honour and commemorate those lost in recent conflicts.

“We are working closely with our insurers and the police, who are investigating the incident.

“Anyone with information is urged to come forward and assist in identifying those responsible.

“Our priority is to restore the Memorial Garden as soon as possible so it can continue to serve as a place of reflection and remembrance.

“We are grateful for the outpouring of support from the community and ask for patience as we carry out repairs and due diligence.”
