Warnock, unveiled as new boss the day before, watched his side overcome the loss of centre-half Richard Wood in the 79th minute to earn a Championship point.

Wood received his marching orders after picking up a second yellow card, for a foul on Clayton Donaldson.

Left-back Joe Mattock went in time added on, also picking up a second yellow when he delayed a throw-in.

Rotherham had to battle throughout the second half, having been the better side before the interval.

In the 75th minute, goalkeeper Lee Camp did superbly to keep the scores level, holding on to Jacques Maghoma's shot when the Birmingham man was clean through.

Rotherham, full of energy and endeavour under their new boss, passed up on two big chances to take the lead in the first half.

Paul Green was inches away from connecting in front of an empty net with Kirk Broadfoot's header back across goal from a corner after half an hour and a minute later Matt Derbyshire, latching on to Danny Ward's header, brought a fine near-post save from Tomasz Kuszczak.

Warnock had gone for the 4-4-2 formation fans had been calling for, dropping young midfielder Grant Ward to the bench and opting for the experience of Green.

Attacking midfielder Andrew Shinnie was ineligible against his parent club so Derbyshire came in to partner Danny Ward up front.

Utility man Greg Halford, told he had no Millers future when previous boss Neil Redfearn was in charge, was named among the substitutes, along with teeenage striker Jerry Yates.

Halford came on and his overhead kick in the 90th minute landed on the roof of the net.

The Millers remain in the bottom three but, given the circumstances, this was an excellent result to to kick off Warnock's reign.
