Yorkshire Water staff cleared six sackfuls of wet wipes from one manhole in Gleadless to get sewage flowing freely again and reduced the risk of sewage leaks.

The grimy episode has prompted a warning from the utility firm for Sheffield residents to only flush the three Ps – pee, poo and (toilet) paper.

Mark Hammond, Yorkshire Water’s head of customer field services,, said: “This incident shows the impact flushing other items, such as wet wipes and sanitary products, can have on the network.

“It’s really important people remember to only flush the three Ps – pee, poo and (toilet) paper – and throw other items in the bin to reduce blockages.”

Yorkshire Water supplies around 1.24 billion litres of drinking water to more than five million people every day, and manages 62,000 miles of mains pipes.
