The council and the company responsible for operating the city’s recycling sites have reminded city businesses that recycling sites are provided for household waste only.

Waste produced by businesses must be disposed of through a paid-for commercial waste and recycling collection service.

Businesses caught breaking the rules will face action, warned Coun Mark Jones.

The council said: “Businesses are further reminded that it is a criminal offence to dispose of commercial waste at local recycling sites, and doing so could result in a £50,000 fine up to five years imprisonment.

“All businesses have a legal duty to dispose of their waste correctly.

This trend has meant that residents are frequently finding that the recycling containers are full despite a regular emptying and maintenance schedule, said a Veolia spokesman.

Coun Jones, council cabinet member for environment, street scene and climate change, said: “Unfortunately, residents are becoming less able to use our local recycling sites due to the illegal use of businesses to dispose of their commercial waste. This will not be tolerated.

“We are actively monitoring all sites and we will not hesitate to take enforcement action against any business found not to be disposing of their waste correctly.”

Residents using local recycling sites are asked to report any full containers or waste left on the ground to Veolia on 0114 2734567 or by email [email protected].

Where the containers are full, residents are asked to take their recycling home or to another recycling site.
