Why police plane was spotted over Sheffield on Monday night

Police sent aeroplane to conduct patrols of Sheffield from the air

Police have explained why their aeroplane was seen circling over Sheffield on Monday night.

The fixed wing aeroplane, with its distinctive yellow and black markings, was seen by residents in and around the city centre.

But while police confirmed they had sent the aircraft to Sheffield, they said it was not in response to a particular incident.

A spokesman for the National Police Air Service said: “On the evening of Monday, October 19, 2026, a police aeroplane crew, on returning to its base at NPAS East Midlands Airport, carried out routine patrols over South Yorkshire and Derbyshire.

“There were no specific taskings.”
