No-one charged nearly a week since murder probe launched after body found in Sheffield woods after shooting

A family member wrote on social media: “RIP my lovely nephew Ryan. You will always be loved, remembered”

Nearly a week since a murder investigation was launched after the body of a 38-year-old man was found with a gunshot wound in Sheffield woods no-one has yet been charged over the killing.

Police were called out to Sheffield’s Ecclesall Woods on Whirlowdale Road shortly before 7pm on Wednesday (September 2) - where Ryan Kettlewell’s body was found.

As investigations continued officers guarded the entrance to the woods, with tape being used to block off the road and cordon off a large section of the surrounding area.

South Yorkshire Police confirmed on Friday (September 4) a forensic post-mortem examination revealed the victim had died as a result of a gunshot wound and a murder investigation had been launched.

The previous day police had arrested a woman aged 34 and a man aged 36 in Manchester on suspicion of murder - however charges remain outstanding and both have since been released on bail.

The dead man’s identify was not released during the first few days of the probe, however on Sunday (September 5) police confirmed his name, saying he was a “local man”, aged 38.

Ryan’s family described him as a “lovable character who will be missed”.

In a statement they added: “We will always continue to love him and will miss him greatly."

Detective Chief Inspector Andy Knowles, senior investigating officer for the case, said: "We are committed to finding answers of how Ryan lost his life.

“I continue to urge anyone with information about his death to get in touch, no matter how irrelevant or insignificant you believe it to be, it could be the missing piece we need.”

Police believe drivers could hold the key to what happened to Ryan and are urging anyone who may have filmed anyone entering the woods, or activity taking place as they drove past on Tuesday or Wednesday, to check their dashcams.

Since Ryan’s death was announced those who knew and loved him have left moving messages on social media.

Two of his aunts have spoken of how loved the 38-year-old was.

One, Carol Kettlewell, said: “RIP my lovely nephew Ryan. You will always be loved, remembered and missed by me, Kevin and all your family.”

Another, Louise Damms, added: “It is with such a heavy heart that I'm writing this. Our nephew Ryan has been taken away from us so tragically.

“He was very much loved by all his family and we will miss his cheeky sense of humour. I love you always, till we meet again.”
