Crews from six fire stations were sent out to the incident, near the Ponderosa park, at 11.42am because of the size of the building, with fire engines from Rivelin, Central, Elm Lane, Parkway, Lowedges, Birley, and Aston fire stations involved.

When the arrived, they discovered a small fire in one of the flats - but there was concern for the kittens.

A fire service spokesman said: “Firefighters rescued kittens from the flat and gave them oxygen.

“The fire is believed to have started accidentally. Luckily there were no reports of any casualties. “

Crews were on the scene for just under two hours.
