Early morning sighting of missing Barnsley man

A new early morning sighting has been confirmed of a 72-year-old man who was reported missing from Barnsley yesterday afternoon.

Derek Atkinson was reported missing yesterday afternoon, after he left Grange Lane, Cundy Cross at about 2.40pm.

A spokesman for South Yorkshire Police confirmed this afternoon that a member of the public spotted Derek just after midnight.

It is now confirmed that Derek was last seen at 12.15am this morning, on Silverstone Avenue, Cudworth, walking in the direction of Oulton Drive.

A/Sergeant Becky Harrison, said: “Our concerns for Derek are growing, especially as he has now been missing overnight in cold, wet weather.

“We’ve got officers and PCSOs out in the Cundy Cross and now Cudworth areas of Barnsley looking for Derek and we’re continuing to ask for your help – have you seen Derek?

Derek is described as being about 5ft 6ins tall, a slim build and thought to be wearing a rain jacket which is light blue/grey on the top half and dark blue/grey on the bottom half, light grey smart trousers and black shoes.

Anyone who has seen him is asked to speak to an officer in the area or call 101 quoting incident number 688 of November 16, 2019.
