Doncaster RLFC: Kesik aims to be on-song against the Scorpions

For it means that the club has picked up another win in their bid to get out of League One at the first attempt.

“We’ve got a club song which we sing in the dressing room when we’ve won and as captain I have to start it off,” revealed the popular hooker.

Kesik is hoping to be on song after Sunday’s home game against lowly South Wales Scorpions despite the game having being switched to the Keepmoat Stadium’s athletics arena due to annual maintenance work on the main pitch.

“We played at Castle Park last season for a couple of games last season which we all enjoyed even though we lost them both,” said Kesik.

“I don’t know the reason we are playing at the athletics stadium this time - whether it’s for financial reasons or whether Castle Park isn’t available - but it’s not a problem for us even though we lost the only other time we’ve played there.

“We train on the pitch every Friday during the season so we are familiar with it and I don’t think playing there as opposed to the Keepmoat will have much of a bearing on the game.

“We’ll still be able to play an expansive game and hopefully come up with another win.

“They are struggling down near the bottom and I know from personal experience what it’s like turning up for a game and not knowing the name of the person playing next to you.

“I’ve certainly got sympathy for the clubs in development areas because it can be hard to recruit and retain good players, but that won’t extend to Sunday’s game because we not only need to win but also try and improve our points difference as that could prove vital in our efforts to finish in the top four.

“As I say, they are struggling but I’ve heard they’ve signed a couple of new players and are playing better.

“We certainly won’t be treating them lightly after being given a tough game by Coventry and losing at Newcastle.”

He added: “With it being so tight at the top, certainly in the battle to finish in the top four and claim an extra home game in the play-offs, we know that we can't afford to lose any of our remaining four league games, of which Rochdale will be the toughest.”
