WATCH: Busy Sheffield road closed as firefighters battle van blaze

Emergency services shut a busy Sheffield road while firefighters battled flames from a vehicle fire on Monday morning.

Handsworth Road was closed to traffic while firefighters dealt with the incident, which began when a van reportedly caught fire at around 11.30am. One fire engine was present at the scene, with police also in attendance.

An ambulance was also pictured on Handsworth Road after it stopped to see if medical assistance was required. No injuries were reported and the road reopened at around 12pm.

One witness said they heard ‘a large bang’ at around 11.30am before seeing the van on fire.

A spokesperson for South Yorkshire Police said: “Police were called at 11.29am today (24 August) to reports of a car on fire in Handsworth Road.”

A South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue spokesperson confirmed the fire started accidentally.

They said: “We were called to this incident at 11:27am. We left at 12pm and the incident was recorded as accidental.”
