Warning over bogus council contractors charging for jobs in Sheffield suburb
A police warning has been issued about bogus council contractors charging for jobs on a Sheffield estate.
There have been reports of ‘workmen’ attending addresses in the Basegreen area of Sheffield and claiming to be working as contractors for Sheffield City Council.
It is claimed they have been telling residents they have been cutting back trees and then charging occupants of properties for the work.
South Yorkshire Police said: “Sheffield City council have confirmed that they are not carrying out any work of this nature and are currently only carrying out emergency work.
“Please be vigilant if someone attends your address asking to carry out work and always ask for identification.
“Do not pay any money up front and if they are purporting to carrying out work on behalf of a company please advise them that you will check directly with the company that this is genuine work.”
