Sophie Harris, 22, was working at the Premier store on Bramall Lane when the shooting took place just yards away outside the anchor point flats.

She told the Star how the victim came into the shop which stands on the corner of Bramall Lane and Cherry Street.

“He came in and said ‘I’ve been shot, call an ambulance.’

“He was pacing around a bit, there wasn’t much blood – he showed us the wound.”

Two other customers were also inside Premier when the man stumbled in. Staff locked the shop door immediately.

Sophie said he seemed “angry, but calm” as he waited for emergency services to arrive.

He was able to walk to the ambulance himself.

“We get a lot of trouble here on match days but never that sort of stuff,” she added.

Before the gunshot victim came into the shop another customer had entered about a minute before and told staff he had seen pigeons flying into the air after a loud noise, thought to be the gun shot. The man had been in the Railway Hotel across the road at the time.

But Sophie said her and one other colleague who was working did not hear anything.

“It was all quite quick,” she said.

“Police said there’s not really anything to go off.”

Another nearby worker claimed armed police had been present earlier in the afternoon by the Premier store, and that police also searched a nearby patch of grass and trees.

South Yorkshire Police are now appealing for witnesses to the incident.
