Van driver arrested for drink and drug offences after crash leaves cyclist ‘seriously injured’

A van driver was arrested for drug possession, driving dangerously and driving over the limit after a crash left a cyclist hospitalised with ‘serious injuries’.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesperson said officers were called to reports of a collision between a van and a cyclist on Burncross Road in Sheffield at around 7.25pm on Tuesday, 23 June. The crash is believed to have happened by the turning onto Blackburn Drive, close to the Wharncliffe Arms pub. Police temporarily closed the Burncross Road while emergency services dealt with the incident.

The cyclist, a man in his 50s, was taken to hospital with “serious injuries”, police said. As of Saturday he remained there in a stable condition.

The spokesperson added: “A 26-year-old man, the driver of the van, was arrested on suspicion of being over the prescribed limit, causing injury by dangerous driving and possession of Class A drugs.

“He has since been released under investigation.”
