Travellers spend another night at illegal site near Sheffield

Travellers are spending a second night near Sheffield – one month after another illegal site was set up at the same place.

Around a dozen caravans arrived at Catcliffe Recreation Ground in Rotherham yesterday and remain there this evening.

It was understood that police officers visited the site and the travellers were expected to have moved on my noon today but they remain there this evening.

Extra security measures were installed at the recreation ground last month after two dozen traveller families spent a week on the football pitches there.

But they gained access to the site via a different entry point this time.

Last month they broke into changing rooms and toilets during their stay and a clean-up operation had to be mounted due to human excrement and general waste left on the grass.

Last night four traveller families spent the night on Asda’s car park in nearby Handsworth.
