Police are investigating after Shoaib Khan shared footage of himself confronting a group of teenagers who he said had repeatedly shouted ‘Mohammed’ at him in a mock Asian accent while ‘falling about laughing’.

Mr Khan told how he felt ‘demeaned’ by the episode, which happened as he was leaving the shopping centre yesterday, Sunday, August 9, shortly before 8pm.

“I was just walking back to my car minding my own business when it happened,” said the 30-year-old, who works as a project manager for Nottinghamshire County Council.

"I felt really demeaned. I’ve had worse racial abuse in the past and never reported it before but I thought I’m not putting up with this anymore.

"It’s shocking that in this day and age young people still think racism’s fair game for a laugh and a joke, and they believe they can get away with it.

“If they can do this to me they can do it to anyone, and their next victim could be a vulnerable older woman in a hijab who feels really intimidated.

"Sheffield’s a great place and this problem’s not particular to the city but I have a niece and nephew living there and I don’t want them to grow up having to deal with this kind of unacceptable behaviour.

"If we let this sort of thing slide without challenging it then the next generation’s going to suffer as much as we have.”

When Mr Khan confronted the three teenagers – two girls and a boy he believes are aged between 15 and 17 – they were filmed claiming they had thought he was their friend called Mohammed – an excuse he didn’t believe for one moment.

He has been widely praised for speaking out on social media, with many people calling for police to take action.
