Stagecoach Supertram has revealed how a CCTV camera was ripped from the roof of a tram following the match at Hillsborough on Saturday, February 29, as it travelled from Middlewood to Meadowhall.

It is not known whether Owls or Rams fans were responsible for the offence, which the operator said had caused ‘significant damage’ to wiring and other parts of the tram, meaning it had to be withdrawn ‘at the earliest opportunity’ at the Arena stop.

The incident comes just weeks after a photo shared online appeared to show stranded football fans climbing through a tram door which had been kicked out ahead of Sheffield Wednesday’s match against Millwall on Saturday, February 1.

That happened during a day on which there were reports of widespread football-related disorder, which is not understood to have blighted last weekend’s game to the same degree.

A spokeswoman for Stagecoach Supertram said: “One of our trams was deliberately vandalised with significant damage caused following the Sheffield Wednesday vs Derby County football match on Saturday.

“We're extremely disappointed that once again the actions of a small number of football fans have caused disruption to our services.

“It is crucial that the police, the football clubs and ourselves work together to prevent vandalism and behaviour that causes issues for our customers and staff.”

The Star has contacted South Yorkshire Police and Sheffield Wednesday for a comment.
