South Yorkshire Police officer hospitalised after attack

A South Yorkshire Police officer was taken to hospital with head and chest injuries after an attack while on duty.

The officer was carrying out enquiries into suspicious behaviour on Bawtry Road, Brecks, when he was assaulted at around 3.30am yesterday.

He was taken to hospital for treatment and has since been discharged.

Samuel Barnett, aged 22, of Garden Close, Broom, has been charged with assault causing actual bodily harm, assaulting an emergency services worker, criminal damage, possession of a bladed article in a public place and possession of a Class B drug.

He is police custody and due at Sheffield Magistrates’ Court this morning.

Barnett is the second person to appear in court in connection with assaulting a Rotherham police officer this week.

Nicole Walsh, 28, of St Leonard’s Lane, Eastwood, appeared before magistrates yesterday accused of assault, assaulting an emergency services worker and criminal damage following an incident in Eastwood in the early hours.
