South Yorkshire police chief compares astonishing Mars images to 'grainy' CCTV footage helping cops catch criminals

A police chief in South Yorkshire has said what many cops were probably thinking after seeing the astonishing close-up images of Mars captured by the NASA rover Perseverance.

Craig Batham, who is the deputy chief officer of the voluntary South Yorkshire Police Special Constabulary, tweeted: “Is it just me that looks at the footage from Mars and is amazed at the quality from how many miles away, and yet sees CCTV of a shoplifting from 6ft away and can see bog all bar a grainy image of a black smudge on the screen that might be a person?”

His observation has been liked more than 140 times and struck a chord with one of the constabulary’s special sergeants, who is part of the dedicated team of volunteers giving up their free time to help keep the region safe.
