Joe Robotham, aged 23, was injured in an incident outside Vibe in Holywell Street, Chesterfield town centre, at around 3.50am on Saturday, February 8.
He was taken to hospital but could not be saved and died at 11.30pm the following day.
Connor Rose, 24, of no fixed abode, has been charged with murder and possession of an offensive weapon.
He is due to appear at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates’ Court this morning.
A second man, aged 28, who was arrested on suspicion of affray, has been released on bail pending further inquiries.
A fundraising appeal has been set up to help Joe’s family with funeral expenses.
Luke Keeling, who has set up an online Go Fund Me page for his friend, said Joe was a soldier, Sheffield United fan and ‘football fanatic’.
He said: “Joe was an amazing bloke that words can’t describe, he was loved by all and hated by none, he would give you a 10 mile smile when all was gloom and create a moral lifting boost whenever you’re down.
“Joe was a well known soldier whilst serving in the 1st Battalion The Mercian Regiment for a staggering four years, serving on exercises in Canada, Lithuania and Oman.
“He made many friends and endless memories.
“A true Sheffield United fan and a football fanatic, his presence may be gone but his memory will live on.”
