Sheffield road closed after alleged drunk driver ploughs into lamp post after police chase

A normally busy Sheffield road was closed on Sunday night after an alleged drunk driver smashed into a lamp post during a police chase.

Police said the driver was pursued after failing to stop for officers on a patrol in the Highfield area at around 11.20pm. After a “short pursuit”, he crashed into a lamp post on Alderson Road outside the JE James Cycles bike shop.

The motorist, a 47-year-old man, was detained under suspicion of dangerous driving and failing to stop for police.

The road was closed off temporarily while the incident was dealt with. A photo showed one police car alongside a fire engine at the scene.

A South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue spokesperson said a crew attended to make the vehicle safe and disconnect the car’s battery.

A J E James Cycles spokesperson said the crash put the store’s internet and phone lines out of service. There was no damage to the shop.
