“It’s getting worse" says "shocked" resident after two shootings in one Sheffield neighbourhood

“These are serious incidents and I know that the public will rightly be concerned”

Residents have been left “shaken” after police flooded two streets in one Sheffield neighbourhood following shootings in the early hours of the morning.

The two incidents took place within 11 minutes of each other on both Swanbourne Road and Horninglow Road in the Firth Park area just after 4.30am on Wednesday (September 23).

Officers were first called to a firearms discharge on Swanbourne Road at 4.31am, before receiving reports of another shooting on Horninglow Road at 4.42am.

The two streets are only a 10 minute walk away from one another, with police saying that unknown suspects riding on electric bikes reportedly shot at properties.

No injuries have been reported.

“It’s a bit scary to be honest,” said Vicky Herrington, who has lived on the Horninglow Road for 25 years.

“It’s getting worse isn’t it?”

Vicky said that she was woken up by “two big loud bangs” at around 4.30am before police arrived.

She said there had also been a shooting in the area a number years ago and described it as “not the quietest of roads” but was still surprised to hear something like this had happened again.

“It is quite a decent area, but when it happens it shakes you,” she added.

She went on to say: “I’m just shocked, I hope everyone’s alright.”

Other people in the area also reported hearing loud noises in the morning, with one woman saying she thought they were fireworks while another person reported seeing people on motorbikes.

Horninglow Road runs next to Longley Park Sixth Form College, which closed its doors for the day while police investigated.

It is understood lessons took place online, with the college set to reopen as normal on Thursday, September 24.

“We would like to thank our students for their excellent engagement with remote learning today,” the college said in a statement.

“Your cooperation has been greatly appreciated and has helped minimise disruption to learning.”

Mohammad, who lives on the same street, said he hadn’t heard anything overnight but added: “I was talking to my neighbour and he said that he heard something like a shotgun this morning.”

He woke up to police on the street who told him he couldn’t go to work as they had to block off the road.

Having lived in his house for more than eight years he said it’s a “good street” with “good neighbours” and he had “never seen something like that” happen before.

“Because of this college I feel more safe, you know?” he continued.

“Police come to check, not always, but because of this college they try to make it safe.”

Firth Park councillor Fran Belbin has called on residents to co-operate with police as investigations continue.

She added: “I recognise how worrying the firearms discharges on Swanbourne Road and Horninglow Road are for the local community, causing the nearby Longley Sixth Form College to close for the day.

“Thank you to the South Yorkshire Police officers who are investigating. I strongly urge anyone with any information about these incidents to contact police or Crimestoppers.”

CSI investigators were at the scenes in the morning, with police saying that they are working “around the clock” to bring those responsible to justice.

A large hole was spotted in the window of one address on Horninglow Road, with further damage to the house’s door.

Superintendent Martin Simcock said: “These are serious incidents and I know that the public will rightly be concerned. When reckless individuals discharge a deadly weapon, they put innocent lives at risk.

“Our officers will work around the clock to bring the suspects to justice. We will also have an increased officer presence in the area in the coming days for the reassurance and safety of the public.

“We take gun crime incredibly seriously in South Yorkshire, but we cannot solve this issue alone.

“This is the second time this week that we are responding to reports of a firearms discharge in Sheffield, and we simply cannot go on like this.

“We need the support of the public, we need you to report anything you think you might know about serious crime so that we can thoroughly investigate.

“If you suspect someone is in possession of an illegal firearm, tell us so that we can take action before the weapon is used.

“If you have information about this latest incident, please get in touch with us online or by calling 101, quoting incident number 116 of September 23 2026.”
