At around 4.40am on June 22, South Yorkshire Police roads policing officers spotted Iqbal driving a black Mercedes at excessive speed along the Sheffield Parkway.

Police said he narrowly missed the central reservation as he swerved across lanes before officers stopped the vehicle.

Officers immediately noticed Iqbal was slurring his words and could smell alcohol.

He admitted he had been drinking and was asked to provide a roadside breath test.

Iqbal recorded a reading of 87 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35.

He was arrested and taken into custody, where police said he became obstructive, refused to provide a further sample and gave officers false details.

Checks later revealed Iqbal was already disqualified from driving and had no insurance.

Iqbal was remanded in custody and appeared before Sheffield Magistrates' Court the following day, where he pleaded guilty.

He returned to the same court for sentencing on July 7.

He was jailed for 12 weeks, banned from driving for a further three years and eight months and ordered to pay £239 in court costs and fees.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: “ Drink driving is not acceptable, it kills - it’s a fact.

“These decisions by Iqbal could have led to innocent people losing their lives.

We’re urging you to help us create safer roads.

“Have a conversation, raise awareness, spread the zero-tolerance for people losing their lives because of other’s selfish actions, and if you believe someone is drink driving, report it.
