Faulty crossing ruled out as cause of Sheffield crash which left 18-year-old seriously injured

Pedestrian crossing is not part of investigation

Police have confirmed an 18-year-old woman was not hit on a pedestrian crossing in a serious Sheffield crash - amid questions over whether crossing signals at a nearby junction were working correctly.

The woman is now in a stable condition after she was hit by a Honda Civic on Upper Hanover Street shortly after midnight on Monday, September 21.

South Yorkshire Police (SYP) said officers were called at 12.26am following reports of a collision between a pedestrian and a car.

The force has now confirmed the collision did not happen on the pedestrian crossing.

It comes after residents raised concerns that the traffic lights at the junction had not been working on at least one occasion in the week before the crash.

Officers were seen escorting pedestrians across the road last night (Monday) at 8pm, where lights had been reported to not function.

However, SYP have confirmed there is no suggestion any reported problems with the traffic lights played a part in the collision, and the circumstances remain under investigation.

Upper Hanover Street was closed after the collision and reopened at around 12.30pm on Monday although one lane was closed again later in the day.

Police are appealing for witnesses and anyone with dashcam footage to come forward.

Both SYP and Sheffield City Council have declined to comment further while the investigation is ongoing.
