Over the festive period, offensive graffiti was daubed across the door of a new police base on Robey Street, Page Hall, which only opened last month.

The phrase ‘pathetic pigs’ was written on the door in red pen.

A new police team was drafted into Page Hall in October following an increase in issues and rising tensions in the area.

The team then opened up an empty house on Robey Street in December as a community base in a bid to help officers spend more time there getting to know local people and issues.

The aim of the team is to provide long-term solutions to problems.

Issues reported to the police over recent months include anti-social behaviour, violence, noise nuisance, drugs, fly-tipping, prostitution and large groups congregating on the streets at all times of the day and night.

On New Year’s Day and Sunday, January 3 officers responded to reports of fighting in and around Willoughby Street.

Residents described the first incident as akin to a ‘riot’, with around 100 people said to have been involved.

Weapons including poles and golf clubs were said to have been used in the mass brawl in which a 12-year-old girl was knocked unconscious and a three-year-old child was also hurt.

Five arrests were made over that incident, with the suspects released on police bail after questioning.

One witness said: “It was totally out of control with over 100 brawling and swinging weapons and several vehicles on the street were damaged.

“Carnage, chaos, call it what you like - if animals behaved like that they'd be shot.”

Sergeant Tony Cartlidge from the Page Hall neighbourhood policing team said: "It is frustrating and enquiries are under way to identify those responsible for the damage.

“It is out hope that this property can something for the whole community to benefit from, the aim is for it to be a hub for healthcare, mental health and housing support, plus social activities.”
