‘Policing Burngreave has its challenges’: Crackdown on drugs and violence in Sheffield suburb

The Burngreave neighbourhood policing team said officers have ‘had a busy few weeks’ with a blitz on drugs and violent crime.

Eleven arrests have been made since August 1, with suspects held on suspicion of assault, possession of drugs with intent to supply and wounding.

Hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of drugs have also been seized.

Sergeant Ben Hall said: “Policing Burngreave has its challenges, but it’s our job to make sure the people living here feel safe.

"As the city continues to emerge from lockdown, my team has been on the front line throughout, tackling those who think it’s acceptable to engage in violence.”

Three of those arrested were men quizzed over a stabbing on Spital Hill on August 24.

Sgt Hall added: “They have since been bailed with strict conditions not to return to the area. Whilst no one was seriously injured in the incident, I understand that this type of attack can cause distress.“I’d like people to know and be reassured that this area will continue to be a key focus for our routine foot and mobile patrols in the coming weeks.“Local knowledge is vital to successful proactive policing; we have great links in with local organisations and community groups and this means we know exactly where we should be targeting our resources.“For example, we’ve had a number of positive stop-searches because of community intelligence and we’ve also made several vehicle seizures.“We stopped a vehicle recently as part of our daily patrols and discovered approximately £50,000 worth of class A and B drugs in the car. The driver has since been charged and remanded into custody.“This month we’ve also carried out three drugs warrants at various addresses in Burngreave, which has led to the seizure of approximately £200,000 worth of class B drugs.”Anyone who lives in Burngreave and wants to speak to the local policing team should email [email protected]
