Officers in Woodhouse told how letters had been sent to the parents of four youths, describing the measure as a ‘necessary incremental step prior to enforcement and subsequent prosecution’.

The Sheffield South East neighbourhood policing team had previously described how groups of youths were still congregating on streets, with snowballs being thrown at passing cars, despite the lockdown rules which are in place to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

It said that if a child aged under 18 continually breaches the restrictions then the parents can be fined.

The team also described how it had issued two community protection notices over anti-social behaviour in the area, failure to comply with which could lead to conviction and a fine of up to £2,500.

People can be fined £200 for a first breach of the national lockdown rules, doubling each time thereafter to a maximum of £6,400.
