Police "pursuing every available line of enquiry" as hunt for Trans Pennine Trail rapist continues

“We are determined to find the person responsible and bring them to justice”

Police say they are ”pursuing every available line of enquiry” after a rape at a popular South Yorkshire walking spot in broad daylight.

The incident occurred on the Trans Pennine Trail at around 2.50pm on Wednesday, November 4, on a section of the trail between Mexborough Road and Harlington Road.

It has sent shockwaves throughout the community as investigations continue.

In an attempt to reassure people, Senior Investigating Officer DI Helen Hughes has issued a statement saying a team of “experienced detectives” are investigating the matter to bring the person responsible to justice.

“I know that what has happened on the Trans Pennine Trail has caused real concern, particularly among women and girls who should be able to enjoy our public spaces without fear,” DI Hughes said.

“As the Senior Investigating Officer, I just want to assure the community that a team of experienced detectives are pursuing every available line of enquiry to identify the criminal responsible. Specialist police officers and staff have carried out thorough searches of the area and are examining forensic evidence, CCTV evidence, and that provided by witnesses.

“We are also reviewing other reports about incidents which may or may not be linked. It is important that we consider any connection, but equally important that we do not make assumptions. We are working with colleagues across South Yorkshire, speaking to people again where necessary, and comparing the circumstances and descriptions given with the reports.

“I cannot share every detail because we must protect the integrity of the investigation to help achieve justice.”

The victim of the crime - who DI Hughes said has “shown immeasurable strength” - previously gave a description of a suspect police are seeking to identify.

He is described as being of a tall, stocky build and was wearing a dark jumper, black gloves and a black face covering.

It is also said that he spoke in a southern accent.

Police are continuing to call on witnesses to come forward and assist in investigations, with anyone with relevant information asked to get in touch with South Yorkshire Police online or by calling 101 and quoting incident number 550 of November 4, 2026.

DI Hughes added: “Alongside the investigation, the neighbourhood policing team and specialist resources are providing a visible policing presence and will continue to do so over the weekend. Local people can expect to see officers on foot, mounted, and in vehicles. While we are focussed on finding the personal responsible, we are also committed to helping people feel safe.

“At the centre of our investigation is a young woman who has experienced something no woman should experience. Officers are keeping her updated and specialist services will offer the full spectrum of support now and in the future. I must remind people that victims of sexual offences are entitled to lifelong anonymity and ask that her privacy is respected.

“As a Detective Inspector in CID, my commitment to women and girls is absolutely clear. We all deserve to feel safe walking our dogs, going for runs, or simply spending time outdoors and we should not have to change our plans in fear. We will focus on those who cause harm and do everything we can to help tackle violence against women and girls in our communities.

“If you were in the area on Wednesday afternoon, please contact us. Something you saw or heard, which may seem insignificant to you, may be the missing piece in our investigation.

“We are determined to find the person responsible and bring them to justice and I am personally committed to doing everything we can to keep women and girls safe.”
