The devices, which reduce exhaust emissions, contain precious metals including platinum, making them valuable on ‘the black market’.
South Yorkshire Police said: “We all think we are doing the best to protect our vehicles. Something most of us would rarely consider, but thieves are increasingly targeting, is the catalytic converter. This is because they contain precious metals and have a high value on the black market.”

“To get to the catalytic converter, thieves must slide underneath. Consider parking close to walls or fences but be careful not to obstruct pedestrian access, particularly for wheelchairs or prams,” the force advised.
“Consider getting a garage to etch a serial number onto the part, this means it can be identified if stolen, or even get the bolts welded shut. There are also some anti-theft devices, such as a cat-clamp, so it's worth doing a bit of research.
“Generally it's always good advice to park in well lit, busier areas and consider installing CCTV to cover your parking space at home. CCTV is becoming cheaper and more affordable all the time.”
