South Yorkshire Police closed the motorway between Junctions 36 for Tankersley and 37 for Dodworth, near Barnsley, earlier this morning and said officers had been deployed to deal with a ‘highways disruption’.

The force later revealed that a herd of deer had got close to the carriageway.

The M1 has since re-opened.
