Police say air support is ‘on standby’

Police air crews are on standby to help in the search for a gang quad bikers at large in Sheffield and Rotherham.

South Yorkshire Police’s motorcycle and rural crime team says issues with quads and bikes are a problem across the county but officers have recently been alerted to a specific group of around 15 Enduro bikes.

The team has pre-warned the National Police Air Service that their helicopter or aeroplane may be needed to help in the search for the gang.

The team said: “This group is running across the county up into the Peak District near Redmires Reservoirs, cutting through ancient woodlands and navigating public footpaths along their route.”

One of the latest sightings saw them in and around Wickersley, Listerdale Woods, and Silverwood Nature Reserve, near Rotherham.

The police team added: “These bikes are running without registration plates and - as experience tells us - when we intercept them, they frequently turn out to be stolen, ridden without a licence, and completely uninsured.

“In the run-up to Christmas, we will be actively waiting for them. With our drone unit overhead and NPAS (National Police Air Service) on standby, we are well-prepared to safely track and intercept this group.”

Officers are asking anyone with pictures or video or the group to send it to them to [email protected]
