Emergency first aid was provided at the scene and Kavan was rushed to hospital but despite the efforts of medics could not be saved and died on August 18.

A man was caught on CCTV running away from the crime scene on the night of attack but has never been tracked down.

Four men were charged with conspiracy to commit robbery as part of the police investigation into the murder and are due to stand trial soon but nobody has yet been charged over the stabbing.

Detectives investigating the murder want to trace Ahmed Farrah, who is believed to hold vital information about the incident.

He was captured on CCTV at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, where he was treated for facial injuries, on the same night that Kavan was stabbed.

He returned to the hospital the following day but then disappeared.

Farrah, also known as ‘Reggie’, was last seen in Cardiff the month after Kavan’s death but then went to ground.

In a recent Facebook post, Kavan’s mum, Emma Hamilton, suggested people living in Upperthorpe may have witnessed the incident or activity on the night of the attack which could help detectives but have failed to come forward.

She said: “I hope people reading this who lived in the area at the time of it happening and saw something, if you are with holding information I really hope you never end up my position.”

Anyone with information about Kavan’s murder or the whereabouts of Farrah should call South Yorkshire Police on 101 and quote incident number 827 of August 14.

Crimestoppers can be contacted on 0800 555111.
