Men charged over thousands of pounds worth of phones, drugs and tobacco found at Doncaster prison

Two men have been charged over the discovery of phones, tobacco, worth up to £50,000, at a Doncaster prison.

They were arrested after a 25-year-old man was searched at HMP Doncaster on Tuesday, November 26.

The illicit items found were valued at between £34,000 and £50,000, according to South Yorkshire Police.

Thomas Walls, of Zetland Road, Intake, Doncaster, has since been charged with offences including possession with intent to supply a Class A and Class B drugs plus conspiracy to convey prohibited items into prison.

He is due to appear before Doncaster Magistrates’ Court today.

A second man, Timothy Avril, of HMP Doncaster, has also been charged in connection with the discovery of the illicit items.

He is accused of conspiracy to convey prohibited items into prison, possession of a Class B drug and possession of a phone in prison.

The 27-year-old is due to appear before Doncaster Magistrates’ Court on Friday, November 29.A 23-year-old woman arrested over the incident has been released under investigation as enquiries continue.

Police and prison officers have been cracking down on the amount of illicit items getting into Doncaster prisons over recent months.

A number of high profile operations have been mounted, with visitor searches carried out and patrols of the perimeter fences mounted in a bid to prevent items being thrown into prisons for inmates.
