“You could have killed someone so easily”

A man shot at a drug rival’s Range Rover twice “in broad daylight”, sending neighbours fleeing for safety.

Kyle Dearn, of Pitt Street, Rotherham, “shattered” the peace of the Kimberworth street when he produced a shotgun and chased after the car on August 2, 2025.

CCTV played at Sheffield Crown Court on Wednesday (July 15) showed how the 4x4 rapidly reversed up Pitt Street as its driver realised the danger, before Dearn, 38, appeared and fired twice.

The court heard Dearn carried out the shooting in revenge for someone throwing a brick through his mother’s window.

“It was a wholly disproportionate response, and I must ruled you are a danger to the public,” said The Recorder of Sheffield, His Honour Judge Jeremy Richardson KC.

“It was a public street in the middle of the day. There were children in many of the homes on that street.

“Members of the public were going about their business - washing cars, walking. It was an ordinary day.

“And the peace was shattered when you opened fire.

“I accept that you did not intend to kill - but you could have killed someone so easily by what you did.”

Neither the victims in the Range Rover nor a number of males seen running from the scene away from Dearn were ever identified. It is not known if the car was shot, as its owners never came forward.

The court heard the victims were “almost certainly” a criminal gang, who - in interviews with prison doctors - Dearn only ever referred to as “the Albanians.”

The court heard Dearn - who pleaded guilty to possessing a shotgun with intent to endanger life - was “deeply remorseful” for how his actions have impacted his family, who have now moved house out of fear of retaliation.

He has previous convictions for another firearm offence 25 years ago as well as a history of drug related crime.

“You now realise the impact upon your family as repercussions for your criminal act,” said the judge.

“There is substantial mitigation, in particular your baleful upbringing.

“However, the facts speak for themselves in regards to whether you are dangerous - you opened fire in a public street. You could have killed someone.”

Dearn was jailed for 11 years, with an extended licence period of four years.
