Three small holes could be seen in the door of a ground floor home on the Lansdowne estate off Club Garden Road in Sharrow.

Police were called to the property this morning, Friday, May 8, at around 2am, by a man who told them he’d been shot. The 53-year-old was taken to hospital to be treated for wounds to his arm and leg, but police said his injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.

The scene remained cordoned off this afternoon and a number of officers were present, seaching the area and speaking to neighbours.

The door window and another window at the property were both boarded up and the vents from the front of the flat were lying on the ground, surrounded by pieces of what appeared to be foam filler, as an officer searched the entrance to the home on hands and knees.

Shocked residents described being woken by two loud bangs before hearing someone running off, with some saying they no longer felt safe living there.

One described it as a ‘brilliant’ community but said he was looking to leave following long-running problems with people dealing and using drugs there.

Another said he was fed up with ‘constant’ fighting, anti-social behaviour and drug dealing on the estate.

But others said there had been relatively few issues there in recent months and years, while a councillor claimed it was an increasingly popular and peaceful area being marred by the actions of a ‘few individuals’.

One man, who asked not to be named, said: “The community’s brilliant and I like this area but we’re going to have to leave because it’s just not safe anymore.

“The problems are with people from other areas coming onto the estate to deal and use drugs because it’s so secluded.

“We’ve asked our councillors for CCTV or gates to stop anyone just driving in but nothing seems to happen.”

Another resident said: “We’ve had fighting, anti-social behaviour and drug-dealing here. It’s just constant and it's been going on for years.”

One couple told how the flat in question had been attacked a few weeks ago and was already boarded up, while about a year ago someone had ‘bashed in’ the door of another property.

They said there had been ‘a couple of stabbings’ in the first six months after they moved in around four years ago but since then things had been relatively peaceful and they ‘don’t feel unsafe’.

Nether Edge and Sharrow ward councillor Jim Steinke, who used to live on the estate, said: “That’s normally a really peaceful area nowadays. There’s a waiting list for the Lansdowne estate and house prices on Club Garden Road have gone up in recent years, which shows people want to live there, but unfortunately there are some problems being caused by a few individuals.

“The police are trying to identify those individuals and bring the full weight of the law down upon them, with the help of people living there.”

Coun Steinke questioned what difference CCTV would make due to the nature of the estate, which has been described as a ‘rabbit warren’, and said getting more ‘bobbies on the beat’ would be more effective.

The shooting on Club Garden Road was one of two in the city overnight.

The other happened on Grimesthorpe Road in Burngreave, where shots were reportedly fired at a group of men, three of whom were hit and taken to hospital. None of their injuries are thought to be life-threatening.

South Yorkshire Police said extra officers would be present in both areas throughout the day and in coming days to provide reassurance.

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101, quoting incident number 7 of May 8 for the incident on Grimesthorpe Road and incident number 78 of the same date for the Club Garden Road shooting.
