Nathan Biggin kidnapped the family after he came across a car with its engine running outside Westfield Pizza Hut at around 10pm last New Year’s Eve.

Biggin, 36, of Welby Place, Meersbrook, then drove off at high speed before the woman escaped by jumping from the vehicle with her young son.

The dramatic incident began when the owner of the car, a Pizza Hut worker, had gone back to his work to collect paperwork and left his car running with his wife and two-year old son inside.

However, while the man was inside the restaurant, a drunk Biggin got into his car and drove off with his family.

On Monday (April 26), Sheffield Crown Court heard Biggin drove at speeds of 70mph, leading the woman to fear for her and her son’s life.

Biggin terrified the victim so much that she decided her only option was to jump from the moving car with her child.

The woman was able to protect her son from injury, get herself to safety and wait for her husband and the police.

After the victim’s husband arrived, Biggin then abused him by shouting racist comments before assaulted a police officer by kicking him in his legs.

He was arrested and later charged with two counts of kidnap, taking a motor vehicle without consent, driving without insurance and assault on an emergency service worker.

Detective Helen Critchley said: “Through the interview process with Biggin he showed no remorse for his actions or the distress he had caused this family.

“The victim was in shock upon officers’ arrival and had cuts to her legs and arms, as well as fractured elbow.

“Herself and family were innocent victims who were put through a terrifying ordeal by Biggin.”

Biggin appeared before court for sentencing on Monday after pleading guilty to the charges. He was sentenced to nine years in prison.

DC Critchley added: “I am pleased with the sentence given to Biggin, he is a dangerous offender who is now behind bars.”
