The friends were spotted by members of the Ecclesfield, Chapeltown, High Green and Grenoside neighbourhood policing team patrolling the streets and were each slapped with £200 fines on Monday night.

A quantity of cannabis was also seized by officers.

South Yorkshire Police said: “Despite the government restrictions we are still seeing lots of people in breach of the regulations. Four more tickets were issued.

“No, meeting your mates for fish and chips and to smoke cannabis is not classed as ‘daily exercise’ or ‘essential travel’.

The fines have received mixed reaction since the police team posted about the incident on Facebook.

Posting on Facebook, Victoria Madden praised the enforcement action.

She said: “I would love to see a lot more people stopped. I work as a community nurse on nights and the amount of people about is shocking. They need fining.”

But Samantha Dixon Carr said: “Stabbings, guns, burglaries and they focus on a couple of people having fish and chips outside?

“Whilst I’m all for following rules and clamping down on parties etc, this is a new low for policing and not how I would like my tax spending. How about making society safer on the streets please.”

Kaleb Yates added: “Do some real work and get something done about the tool thieves that take tradesmen’s means of earning their wages to put food on the table. Waste of tax payers money.”
