Firefighters pump 5,000 litres of water a minute onto Sheffield scrapyard blaze

Firefighting has continued overnight at Carlisle Street, Sheffield.

The fire on Carlisle Street, Burngreave, broke out on Thursday afternoon and is still burning this morning.

In an update issued at around 9.30 am, a South Yorkshire fire Service spokesman said:

Firefighters pump 5,000 litres of water per minute on blaze.Firefighters pump 5,000 litres of water per minute on blaze.

“We're making good progress, but will remain on scene for some time. We're delivering 5,000 litres of water a minute onto the fire.

“On site machinery is helping to move the materials, allowing firefighters to reach the deep seated fire.

“This, combined with a change in wind direction, might mean periods when there is more smoke in the area. If you're affected, we recommend keeping windows and doors closed.”

He added; “There's still lots of hose in the area, some of which crosses roads, so we're asking you to stay away from the area if possible.”
