A fire crew arrived at around 12.30pm and erected a black screen while the dog’s body was removed from outside the entrance of Venice Pizza. It was previously covered by a foil blanket.

At around 1pm firefighters began hosing down parts of the pavement which were stained by blood. A cordon remains in place at the scene, which is close to the junction with Miller Road. A small section of road is also taped off close to the Pitt Stop Tyres garage at the junction with Farrar Road.

One nearby resident told The Star the dog is believed to have belonged to a suspected gang member. The news comes after two shootings took place on Machon Bank and Glen Road in nearby Nether Edge during the early hours of Thursday morning (23 July). No one was injured in either attack but a house window and car were damaged.

The animal was put down after suffering injuries “consistent with shotgun discharge,” a police spokesperson said. Locals said it was initially shot outside Marmions and ran away, leaving a trail of blood, before it was later shot outside Venice Pizza by the police to put it down.

Shocked residents reported being woken by six bangs before hearing three police vehicles with their sirens blaring racing down the road minutes later. A community leader has warned the area is ‘becoming a battleground’ between rival gangs in the wake of the latest shooting.
