Police understand that a gun was fired at a house on Elmham Road, Darnall, between 10.30am and 11am on Saturday (October 3) morning.
However, officers say they were not called called out until 12.39pm the same day.
Police have confirmed that evidence of a ‘firearms discharge’ was found at the scene, and say that no injuries were reported.
Officers investigating the incident believe a silver car, thought to be a Mercedes, was at the scene and that a passenger got out of the car and fired a gun at a property before getting back in the vehicle and being driven away.
Pictures show a hole in a ground floor window in a house, which was cordoned off with police tape. The hole has a circumference of several inches.

Crime Scene Investigators were at the scene in white overalls, with a marked van.
Police initially had a large cordon sealing off the whole of Elmham Road, which they reduced to cover a smaller part of the road at around 6pm, although officers remained at the scene.
Police say enquiries are ongoing and they are working to identify the suspects.
They released a statement just before 5pm on Saturday appealing for witness.

In the statement, Supt Sarah Gilmour said: “This was another reckless act involving a firearm in our community, and while I am glad that no-one was injured, I am all too aware that this is often not the case.
“I want to reassure those in the Darnall community that we will be maintaining a police presence in the area over the weekend, with a patrol plan in place.
“This is primarily to keep you safe, and I would urge anyone with any concerns to speak to our officers when you see them on patrol.
“We will not allow gun crime to be normalised in South Yorkshire, but to eradicate firearms offences, we need your help.
“If you have information about this incident you can get in touch online or by calling 101, quoting incident number 416 of Saturday 3 October 2026.”

Residents spoke of their shock, as well as their surprise at the amount of time between the shooting, which police said saw a gun fired at a house, and the arrival of police, who say they were not called until well over an hour after the incident.
One resident said he had heard a loud bang but had assumed it was a firework.
He said: "I heard a really loud bang and thought it was fireworks, because there have been kids doing fireworks.
"I didn't know it was a shooting. You don't expect that sort of thing here. I thought that sort of thing just happened in America.
" I thought it was fireworks because we're close to Halloween and Bonfire Night.
"Then I saw it was all blocked off by police"
His friend expressed surprise about the time between the incident and the arrival of officers.
“I would have expected police to be there immediately,” he said.
One woman living nearby said she had seen the cordon when she went out shopping but had not heard anything.
She said: "It can be quite noisy here, but only shouting. I was so surprised when I heard what had happened.
“I've lived here 25 years and nothing like this has happened on the street before. It's scary to hear what happened."
Police say enquiries are ongoing and they are working to identify the suspects.
This was the third shooting at a property in a matter of weeks in Sheffield, following recent incidents in Longley and Fieldhead Road.
Police have not said if the incidents are linked.
