A stolen black Honda CRV was pursued across Sheffield on Saturday, with the chase beginning in Broomhall.

The car had been stolen during a burglary and was spotted by an officer, who signalled for the driver to pull over.

The driver failed to pull over but then came to a rapid stop before reverse ramming the BMW police car twice before driving off towards the city centre.

South Yorkshire Police said the chase was discontinued ‘for the safety of other road users’ as the Honda travelled along West Street and was later resumed with an unmarked police Land Rover in pursuit.

The Honda was eventually brought to a halt but the driver abandoned the car and ran off in the Crosspool area, where he was tracked down.

Both he and his front seat passenger were arrested.

South Yorkshire Police said: “All of the vehicles were recovered, ours will live to fight another day.

"We will pursue and try to arrest offenders, but if the risk is so much to other road users, we will always discontinue pursuits.

“As traffic cops we take bumps and bruises on a daily basis, as do all our colleagues across the force, but being intentionally rammed by a criminal who is hell bent on getting away is another level.

“Cars repair, cops take longer. Fortunately this was only bumps and bruises, but it could have been much worse.

“Oh, and thank you to the lovely old lady who approached the officer who had been chasing the male on foot, who was breathing a tad harder than he maybe should have been, and asked "hello officer, did you catch the scallywag". Made our day. Got to love Sheffield.
