Police were called to Abbeydale Road at around 1.10am on Friday to reports of shots fired at a property. When they arrived they discovered a dog "with injuries consistent with shotgun discharge,” a spokesperson said, which sadly had to be put down.

There were no further reported injuries and no arrests have been made so far.

A resident in the area has claimed the dog belonged to a suspected gang member. It comes after two shootings took place on Machon Bank and Glen Road in nearby Nether Edge during the early hours of Thursday morning (23 July). No one was injured in either attack but a house window and car were damaged.

Sahira Irshad, who set up the community group Mums United to combat violent crime in the area, warned the area is ‘becoming a battleground’ between rival gangs after a series of raids reduced the supply of drugs.

She said: “Police are aware of what’s going on and there have been numerous raids but once you’re taking away the supply I think it’s becoming a battleground now.

"You have gangs fighting over the supply and territory and it’s spilling out onto the streets.”

The mother-of-two added: “I’m scared and I think the rest of the community’s scared to let their children out because you don’t know when or where it’s going to happen, or what might trigger it."
