A South Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: “In the early hours of Monday, a vehicle, which was suspected to be stolen, failed to stop for officers in the Shirecliffe area of the city.

“This led to Roads Policing officers commencing a short pursuit, ending in the Prince of Wales Road area with the vehicle attempting to ram the officer's car before the occupants made off on foot.

“The officers quickly passed on information about the description of the driver of the vehicle to response officers in the surrounding area.

“This swift communication resulted in officers stopping a man on Ridgeway Road who was seen out of breath and matching the initial description.”

A 22-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, failing to stop, driving in excess and theft of a motor vehicle.

He has been bailed pending further enquiries.
