Council sends message to frustrated Sheffield drivers after worker ‘threatened with knife’

A road worker was assaulted by a motorist who had driven through a road closure in Beighton.

Resurfacing work was abandoned on Monday night on Beighton Road Woodhouse after a construction workers was allegedly assaulted, then threatened with a ‘large knife’.

Darren Butt, Account Director at Streets Ahead, said: “Last night an employee of our sub-contractor was assaulted by a member of the public who had driven through a road closure on Beighton Road, putting the lives of our employees on-site and members of the public, at risk.

"The police were called and our work temporarily suspended. Incidents of this nature are not uncommon.”

He said Streets Ahead employees regularly experience offensive behaviour, with many suffering physical and verbal abuse whilst at work.

He added: "Dangerous driving through roadworks is not acceptable. In the first two weeks of August alone, we have already had three incidents of vehicles driving through closed roads, putting our employees at risk.

“We therefore implore all road users to use common sense, to follow the diversion signs and road closures put in place for the safety of everyone, so that incidents of this nature do not happen again.”

Temporary traffic lights will remain in place on Beighton Road whilst the site is made safe.

Mr Butt added: “We hope to remove these as soon as possible and for the resurfacing work to recommence once it is safe to do so. We apologise for any inconvenience caused at this time.”

A spokesman for South Yorkshire Police said: “An incident was called in to us at 9.55 pm following a disturbance at Beighton Road, Woodhouse’

“Police received a call at 21.55pm last night with reports of two men fighting on Beighton Road in Sheffield.

“Officers attended and on arrival at the scene were notified that a member of the group who had reported the initial disturbance to police had been assaulted.

“There had been an altercation between a member of the public and a member of the maintenance crew, aged 60 who suffered minor injuries."

The unknown offenders had left the scene.

An investigation is underway to identify those involved and anyone with information should call 101 quoting crime reference number 14/123012/20.
