South Yorkshire Police said a silver Vauxhall Vectra failed to stop for officers on Wednesday morning.

A police pursuit was mounted, during which the Vectra was driven the wrong way along Centenary Way before it crashed into another car at the junction with Sheffield Road.

The car struck by the Vectra, a red Peugeot 107, was being driven by a 73-year-old woman.

She was taken to hospital and kept in for observations.

The driver of the Vectra, a 27-year-old Rotherham man, was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and possession of controlled drugs.

He was later released under investigation while enquiries continue.

Police officers investigating the incident want to hear from witnesses or anyone with dash cam footage.
