‘Mindless’ graffiti has been sprayed on ‘virtually every bench and signpost’ at Rivelin Valley nature trail over the past few weeks, and the area has been heavily littered.

Rubbish discovered strewn around the site include picnic items, cans, bottles and even soiled nappies and used condoms.

The damage is on such a scale that the Rivelin Valley Conservation Group are fundraising to pay for a clean-up operation.

And it’s clear their efforts are appreciated by residents- a fundraising page set up by the group has smashed its £500 target.

One well-wisher thanked the group for their ‘tireless work’ restoring the ‘beautiful urban oasis’.

And Elizabeth Bradshaw said: “The Rivelin Valley is a lovely place to walk through and we have spent many happy hours there. Why do people have vandalise these very precious places?”

A spokesperson for the RVCG said: “While the group do carry a spare amount to cover acts of vandalism such as this, the amount of graffiti to clear is on such a scale that we feel we need help.

“Anything you give will be much appreciated by all. The clear-up will be carried oyt by our volunteers who do the work for the love of the Valley.

“We have installed 38 of these benches and information posts at each of the old mill sites over the last few years and this act of vandalism is heartbreaking.”
