Birley Academy: Boy appears at court on GBH charges over Sheffield school incident which left 3 injured

The teenage suspect appeared in court via video link today

A 17-year-old boy has appeared at Sheffield Crown Court accused of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm, following an incident at a Sheffield school in which three people were injured.

Two adults and a child received minor injuries in the incident ‘involving a sharp object’ at Birley Academy on Birley Lane in Sheffield just before 9am on Monday, May 1, 2024. The school was subsequently placed into lockdown, and the three affected individuals were checked over and treated by medics.

During a hearing held at Sheffield Crown Court this afternoon (Friday, May 31, 2024), the juvenile defendant, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared at court over a video link.

He is charged with three counts of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm.

Dressed in a grey T-shirt, the boy spoke only to confirm his name, age and questions relating to the administration of the case.

The Recorder of Sheffield, Judge Jeremy Richardson KC, told the boy he will next appear in front of him for a plea hearing in July.

He remanded him into youth detention until then.

A provisional trial date was set for August 2024 during this afternoon’s hearing.
