Bonfire night chaos in Sheffield: Fireworks thrown at police and road set on fire

South Yorkshire Police has listed a series of incidents in which fireworks were used in attacks across the city.

In some of the most serious, the force said fireworks were thrown at police officers and vehicles, with the behaviour described as ‘not acceptable’.

Members of the public and vehicles were also targeted.

Exact locations have not yet been disclosed, but the force said officers were deployed to deal with ‘large crowds’ of young people armed with fireworks in Darnall, Tinsley, Fir Vale and Firth Park during the night.

In a statement issued on the night, South Yorkshire Police said: “Our officers are currently dealing with large crowds of young people using fireworks in an anti-social manner across Darnall, Tinsley, Fir Vale and Firth Park.

"Teenagers are believed to be responsible for setting fires in wheeled bins and throwing fireworks at cars and people, including our officers and police vehicles.

"This is not acceptable. Our officers are on duty to keep you safe, this is not part of the job.

“If your child is currently out with friends, please consider where they may be and if they are acting safely.

“Under the national lockdown, gatherings are not permitted and this behaviour will not be tolerated.”

The South East Sheffield neighbourhood policing team reported a ‘very busy’ Bonfire Night shift and said in one incident a group of youths threw fireworks into a road in Tinsley.

A police chase was mounted and two arrests were made.

In another shocking incident, a motorist threw fireworks out of his car at people waiting at a bus stop in Wisewood.

The Sheffield North West neighbourhood policing team said it frightened young children.

In an incident in Darnall last night, a terrified mum dialled 999 after a firework aimed at a bus on Stainforth Road narrowly missed her car, containing her young daughter.

Some bus services were suspended last night on safety grounds because of anti-social behaviour in the city.
