'Absolutely disgusting' day-to-day life in troubled Sheffield neighbourhood as told by one resident

A lifelong resident of a crime-ridden Sheffield neighbourhood ‘at its lowest point’ has lifted the lid on day-to-day life in the area.

Page Hall continues to be blighted by several ongoing issues, including fly-tipping, violence and crowds of people not adhering to social distancing guidelines. Tensions in the community are running high once again as a result.

On Tuesday, Gill Furniss, the MP who represents the area, admitted it has reached its ‘lowest point’ after yet more disorder last weekend when ‘disturbing’ footage of two mass brawls emerged on social media.

The resident, who lives on Page Hall Road and gave his name as Mr Khan, said: “The area is looking like a tip. When I walk down for my break and milk I’m scared to leave my house.

“I feel bullied, intimidated – gangs are jumping people. I’ve been jumped a couple of times just going to the shop and back. You have got to keep your distance or you will get jumped, that’s quite typical.”

Mr Khan, 35, who has lived in the neighbourhood all his life, said gangs of youths regularly congregate in a secluded alleyway close to a primary school and nursery.

He added: “We don’t want people loitering outside. Social services, police, someone needs to take action.”

Rats and fly-tipping are also big problems, Mr Khan said.

“If someone walks out today you would see them on the floor dead – it’s absolutely disgusting. If you look up and down Lloyd Street it’s just boarded-up houses. It’s just a tip.”
